Should You Make Your Website Yourself?

No one said that building a website was going to be an easy job. You may be able to handle the job all by yourself, but there are all sorts of things that you have to pay very close attention to. If you don’t have an eye for detail, then you may have problems when it comes to designing, creating and maintaining you own website. There is a lot going on under the hood of most websites. Here are some of the more common mistakes that people make when designing a website.

Design Means Everything

There are several pieces that must fit together perfectly in order for a web design project to fall in place. You could look at building a website in very much the same way as you would look at building a puzzle. You can’t possibly cram the wrong pieces into the wrong places just to try and make things fit. The end result will be a big sloppy mess that nobody will appreciate. When it comes to design, there are several crucial things that you must look at.

Choosing a Colour Scheme

Colours have a huge influence on how a person interacts with the website. Simply changing the colour of a button can influence somebody to click on it. It has been scientifically proven that certain colours make people responded in certain ways. This is one of the most important aspects of web design, and it is something that you should never overlook.

Navigation

The navigation section of a website is also extremely important. If a person can’t find their way around the website, then they will never be able to get the information that they need from the website. When it comes time to designing the navigation layout, make sure that you always give the end user a way out. You could think of it as leaving a virtual breadcrumb trail that a person can easily follow to move back and forth throughout the website. The navigation should bond well with the colour scheme that has been chosen.

Page Layout

The next thing that needs to be looked at is the layout of the entire site. This will generally fall under the design phase. Once a core design has been chosen, the rest of the pages within the website can just adopt this design scheme. The design scheme has to work well with the navigation layout and the colour scheme as well. All the pieces are starting to come together like the pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Device Compatibility

The next thing that needs to be considered is the compatibility of the website. There are several ways that people can access the Internet. They might be using a computer, a laptop or a mobile device like a tablet computer or a smart phone. All of these devices display websites differently. It is extremely important to understand how your website looks on all of these devices. If you choose to ignore any specific device, then you are choosing to ignore possible customers.

If you keep all of these things in mind, you will have no problems creating your own website.

  1. I designed my website using WordPress which for a beginner found, with a bit of help, fairly easy to do. But its the SEO work which takes time to learn. A website is constant challenge as your never really finished and always updating and changing pages

    • Thanks for the comment Richard 🙂 I’ve watched your blog grow and improve over the last few months, and you’ve done a great job! – I do wish someone had told me about the “never really finished” bit before I started LOL
